There are so many cafes in Israel that cappuccino will soon become the national beverage. Café Jolie is one such place in the hub of Tel Aviv, walking distance from the Shalom train station near the Azrieli tower. I would not normally be in this vicinity at all as I am not a city girl but Nava Writz*, a friend whom I met on twitter and in real life happened to be in town for the week. She chose Café Jolie as the venue for our meeting, situated in a perfect location, with a large shaded patio and far enough from the road to enjoy the bustle of the city without the combustion of traffic or crowded sidewalks. Here it is possible to enjoy a quiet meal while watching the world go by and what an interesting and fashionable world that is in Tel Aviv.

When Nava is visiting Israel she is a fixture at the café, spending enough time there to be well acquainted with its lively rhythm. “It’s my office”, she says “and it’s here I meet up with friends and clients”. It wasn’t long before the owner, Ido, and his wife came to say hello and sat awhile to chat. When I asked Ido about any interesting information about his café he told me “We don’t call the paparazzi and Shlomo Artzi says that this is the only café where he can sit without being disturbed” So if you happen to be a well known star (or not), you will be happy to know that Café Jolie is the place for you.

So what did I order 10 am Monday morning? I ordered the famous Israeli breakfast, which is ubiquitous throughout the country, with every restaurant serving a variation. It usually consists of two eggs, made to order, tomato and cucumber salad, fresh bread and various mezzas such as olives, cheese, homemade jam, avocado spread and tuna. I split the breakfast with Nava’s sister while Nava ordered a tasty tomato shakshuka with lots of red sweet pepper. I’ll be coming to Café Jolie again, to enjoy good food, friends and the chic Tel Aviv atmosphere.

*Navascoop: Will she start her own blog? Stay tuned!
