Open Air Market
Borough Market is an Exploratorium for the senses. The vibrant colors, the hum of the crowds and the tantalizing aromas can seduce even the most reluctant eater. Along with the British Museum and the National Gallery, school children should be taking here to glimpse a cross section of a colorful and diverse society, the interactions between buyer and merchant and most importantly to learn about real food. Many of the stall have samples to taste and there is nothing better than meandering from bite to bite, discovering delicious flavors.

Come lunch time, 1 o’clock sharp, the market becomes a gloriously informal street food bistro, with meals eaten while chatting in small groups, on the go, sandwich in hand or nearby at the countless restaurants and pubs.

Ostridge burgers, chorizo sandwiches, Thai red and green curries, pork pies, oysters, seafood and organic juices….. a veritable food festival, three times a week.
Pork pies and more
This was my very first time in London and like an over eager tourist I was trying to devour one museum after another until even the most magnificent displays left me apathetic. When our friends, Siavash and Naseem, suggested a visit to Borough Market I thought that was the perfect balance. Instead of hushed subdued interiors of the past, the market seemed so alive and inviting.

Wow! Gorgeous, mouthwatering, inviting pictures! I have heard so much about Borough Market but I think these are the first photos I’ve seen of it and now I must go!!! Thanks!
Beautiful photos, they’re making my mouth water! The market sounds like the perfect counterpoint to a morning at a museum, too.

Sarah….an octopus???? really???? ummmmm…not sure what i feel about that…
the other stuff looks yummy though.
love you
Wow! The pictures are just amazing. Looks like I’m going to have make it to London sooner than I thought.
Beautiful pictures Sarah! You have an art of telling a story with amazing images! Must have been quite an experience… I love local markets. I never knew how else to shop before I came to the US! There’s a completely different earthy charm in shopping for individual categories of groceries from different vendors. The supermarket experience over-sanitizes the pleasurable chore!
Yeah, it’s good, very useful, thanks
The market looks amazing Sarah and your photos really capture the vibrancy. I like to read other people’s perspectives on our home country – and you’ve shown me something I know nothing about! We don’t actually know London at all but this has made me want to visit next time we’re back in the UK.
thanks for the kind comments,
Sabera, so true, supermarket shopping is no fun compared to this.
It is an amazing market
Jay P, If I am around I can take you on a tour
Jamie, You must take the time next time you are in London.
Yael, No, nobody yelled at us. much less yelling all around compared to the vendors in Israel
Ben and Robin, thanks, it was a fun place to photograph
My next post will be the markets in Southhall, same city but a completely different atmosphere
So jealous you’re in London during what looks like glorious weather. So nice to eat your way through the market — one of my favorite activities. The farmers’ markets are starting to open up here which is always fun! Gorgeous pictures as ususal.
Thanks for the photo tour. Look amazing! I love the display of olives.
nice pictures
