Hummus on the 6th day of Hannukah

hummus at halil's

Hummus ful at Halil's, Ramle

On the fifth day of Hannukah my computer burnt out, vaporizing everything I wrote in the last three days. So my holiday post is stuck in the voids of a defunct hard drive, hopefully to be recovered sometime in the future. Instead I found pictures of my favorite hummusia, Halil’s in Ramle, where they probably serve the best breakfast in Israel.  After our summer trip to Canada, Halil’s was the first place we visited (let’s face it, eastern Canada might have some great seafood, but they still have a few things to learn about chickpeas). My husband told them “We dreamt of your hummus while we were away”, which wasn’t far from the truth, especially after the fifth day of cod. In return for our loyalty we received a 15% discount and extra falafel balls (super crispy!).

In my opinion Halil’s is better than the hummus in Akko (Hummus Said) and its masabacha (hummus with tehina and whole chickpeas) even surpasses the legendary Abu Hassan in Jaffa.

It is unfortunate that the quaint old city, with its stone arches and narrow alleyways is in such a state of neglect. Rubbish accumulates in deserted corners, ancient buildings are left in disrepair. This is a sad outcome considering Ramle was such a prominent city in the region. Despite this, it is an interesting historical and culinary city to explore.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah to all those celebrating!

I hope this week will only improve. Sorry you had such a lousy day. Maybe you need a Hamsa on the computer or something against the evil eye :)

Sarah, did you take those photos in the restaurant?? How did you get such great lighting? You are really so, so talented.

Good luck with the computer recovery!

Thanks Emily, I make it a point to sit near a window, there is nothing like morning light (especially on hummus)

There are some foods from home we absolutely need after traveling. For us, it’s tacos and good salsa. The hummus and falafel look delicious. Happy Holidays to you!

I hope the computer was fixed quickly Sarah. I share you frustration. On the day after Christmas my computer was attacked by malware – I have some great computer folks who got it back quickly.

I want to try recipes for falafel and I love hummus. Cheers in the New Year!
